Engraved map of the North Pole region hand-colored in outline, image 420 x 534 mm (552 x 660 mm sheet). With rhumb lines radiating from the North Pole, a large title cartouche, with two figures and numerous wind heads, compass roses, ships and an additional vignette of explorers, a polar bear and foxes, Backer's coat-of-arms in "Nova Britannia," French text on verso. (Clean tears to fold mended on verso.)

Blaeu's map of the North Pole region is a close copy of Jansson's Nova et Accurata Poli Artici based on the arctic map of James, Barentsz, Baffin, and others. Second state of the map with the coat-of-arms of Willem Backer.
