Engraved double-hemisphere map, colored by a contemporary hand, image 435 x 530 mm (543 x 640 mm sheet). Showing approximately the southern and the northern third of the world surmounted by north and south polar projections centered on Paris and its antipodes, border decoration of mythological scenes, drawn by the Dutch painter Nicolaes Berchem and depicting Zeus and Neptune in chariots, the rape of Persephone and Demeter receiving the fruits of the earth. (Some minor mostly marginal spotting, small repair to upper margin on verso.)
An exceptional projection of the world by Covens and Mortier. This map was originally made by Nicholas Sanson d'Abbeville (1600-1667) and is combined with a border decoration first used by Visscher on his world map Orbis Terrarum. See Shirley 406 and 408.
