ARIAS, Montanus Benedictus (1527-98). Sacrae Geographiae Tabulam ex Antiquissimorum Cultor. [Antwerp,] 1571 [but 1572].
Engraved double-hemisphere world map, image 318 x 532 mm (354 x 553 mm sheet). Galleons and sea monsters, no text on verso (small marginal ink stamp, some light browning.)
FIRST EDITION, second state (without title printed on verso). "A well-engraved world map. Inserted principally for theological reference [in Plantin's Polyglot Bible Biblia Sacra, Herbraice, Chaldaice, Graece & Latine ....] it shows, amongst other detail, how the tribes of Israel were disseminated ... There is an unusual island shown in the position of Australia which has given rise to speculation, although in common with other spurious land masses off the east coast of America it probably represents no more than the engraver's licence" (Shirley 125); Wagner 86.
