On four circular feet, with four enamelled hexagonal dishes articulated around a gemset waisted quatrefoil, each with polychrome decoration composed of avian motifs interspersed with geometric forms, the hinged lids set with rock crystal finials, the central screw top modelled on a gemset floral bouquet, the reverse with a floral roundel, one lid lacking

Lot Essay

An almost identical spice or cosmetic box is in the Victoria and Albert Museum and was made in Dholepore for the 1851 Exhibition (VAM 131.1852, Mughal Silver Magnificence (XVI-XIXth C.), exhibition catalogue, Charleroi, 1987, cat.237, p.158).
