Ottoman manuscript on burnished cream paper, with names in black naskh script often in green-outlined roundels, with larger text in red- outlined roundels, the lineage starting with Adam and the Abrahamic prophets, including the Islamic dynasties, the ancestors of the Prophet, the pre-Islamic prophets and the ancient Kings of Iran and terminating with Sultan Sulayman II, small losses to the paper at the beginning of the manuscript

Lot Essay

The names of the Sultans on this scroll are accompanied by notes giving the dates of the accession and death as well as details of their conquests.

A similar genealogical scroll in the Metropolitan Museum terminates with the reign of Mehmed IV (r. 1648-1687), the predecessor of Sülayman II (67.272; G. M. Meredith-Owens, 'A Genealogical Roll in the Metropolitan Museum', in Richard Ettinghausen (ed.), Islamic Art in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1972, pp 87-90). A slightly later dated scroll which terminates with the reign of Mustafa III (r. 1757-1774) was sold in Christie's's, London, 7 April 2011, lot 349.
