Lot Essay

Adam designs with friezes of classical figures include a chimneypiece for Derby House, designed 1774 and the painted ceiling for Kedleston, designed 1762, see Eileen Harris, The Genius of Robert Adam, plates 424 and 47, pp. 285 and 35.
Chimneypieces with similar classical figure friezes include The Stratton Park Chimneypiece by John de Vaere, circa 1805, Christie's London 10 July 1998, lot 77, and an anonymous chimneypiece, Christie's London 22 June 1989.
