FIRST EDITION OF THE INAUGURAL LECTURE BY OXFORD UNIVERSITY'S FIRST LECTURER IN GEOLOGY. Buckland attended Corpus Christi College, Oxford, from 1801, gaining his BA in classics and theology there in 1804, before becoming a fellow of that college in 1808, when he was ordained priest. Buckland attended John Kidd's lectures on mineralogy, and in 1813 succeeded Kidd as reader in mineralogy. Determined to improve his income, aware that the science of geology was fast growing, and sensitive to the fact that Cambridge had long had the Woodwardian chair in geology, Buckland successfully lobbied for the creation of a new readership in geology at Oxford. The present work is his inaugural address in this new post, delivered on 15 May 1819, and formulates Buckland's diluvial geology. Ward & Carozzi 367.
