Half-titles to text vols, vol. I in English, vol. II in French. Engraved dedication to Nicholas I, 64 plates comprising 12 tinted lithographic views by L. Haghe after Murchison, 48 lithographic plates and 4 engraved plates of fossils, 4 folding engraved hand-coloured maps of geological sections, 2 folding engraved hand-coloured geological maps, inaccurate plate reference deleted in ink on p.172 in vol. I as usual. (Without [G3] called for by Thackray, but paginating as per Thackray, [e4] bound before d4, 4Y2 bound between 4Q2 and 4R4, tear to 263 without loss, spotting and browning throughout.) Non-uniform modern binder's cloth. Provenance: John C. Thackray.

FIRST EDITION. 600 copies of the book were printed: volume I was printed between November 1842 and October 1845, volume II was probably started sometime in 1844 and completed by July 1845. 100 copies were subscribed for by the Russian government and 30 sent to France; 35 were retained for presentation to contributors and institutions. Copies were not on sale in England until 1st January 1846, and Paris publication was not to happen for another three months after that. German and Russia translations (of volume I) appeared in 1847-1848 and 1846-1848 respectively; a general overview of the palaeontology in volume II was translated into English by David T.
