GERARD MERCATOR (1512-1594) – JODOCUS HONDIUS (1563-1612)
America meridionalis. [Amsterdam: 1609 or later]. Double-page engraved map with inset view of Cusco in Peru, contemporary hand-colouring, French text on verso. (Margins spotted, upper margin with brown mounting paper attached.) 458 x 564mm.
South America balances like a top above the great southland in this striking Hondius map. Two rivers, the Rio Grande and Rio de la Plata, both flowing from a lake named Eupana Lacus, cut Brasil off from the rest of South America.
