Chromolithographed map, additional lithographed titled and 80 lithographed plates on card, 10 of these chromolithographed, some tinted. (Plates with marginal spotting throughout, some spotting in the text.) Contemporary burgundy morocco over boards, sides with wide blind-tooled and gilt border, spine in compartments with raised bands and lettered in gilt, gilt edges, mottled endpapers (spine evenly faded to brown, extremities rubbed and with some fading, sides scuffed). Provenance: the front board centred with the arms of the Kingdom of Hanover -- typed catalogue noted tipped to a blank.
FIRST EDITION OF THE MOST SUMPTUOUS ILLUSTRATED BOOK ON THE CAUCASUS. This copy in a contemporary full morocco binding with the arms of the Kingdom of Hanover. Prince Gagarine prepared the drawings from life during various campaigns in the region, including one with Lermontov. He studied with Briusov, was acquainted with Pushkin, and was later Vice President of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Stackelberg, who also served at length in the Caucasus, had intended to issue a more detailed account to supplement his explanation to the plates, but this was never published.
