The battle of Magdala was fought between the British and Abyssinians in April 1868 at Magdala, which was then the capital city of Abyssinia (now known as Ethiopia). The British envoy had been dispatched to free a group of missionaries, held by Emperor Tewodros II (Emperor Theodore) in retaliation for his unanswered request for munitions and military expertise from Queen Victoria. The envoy was made up of three full regiments, including the 33rd (or The Duke of Wellington's) Regiment. Emperor Tewodros II committed suicide before the fortress was finally seized.
