Lot Essay

This elegant chair, with its low serpentined frame, evokes the comfort of Parisian fauteuils of the early eighteenth century, of the type depicted in the famous Jean-François de Troy painting entitled La Lecture de Molièiere, painted in 1730 (sold from the collection of the Marquess of Cholmondeley, Houghton Hall, Norfolk; Christie's London, 8 December 1994, lot 147, £3,961,500).The design is attributed to Syrie Maugham, who worked in London and New York and was one of the most celebrated female decorators of the 20th century.
