Lot Essay

During his tenure at The Daily Herald Sir Francis Meynell (1891-1975) employed Edward McKnight Kauffer for his highly successful advertising campaign which resulted the latter's well-known Vorticist poster 'Soaring to Success! Daily Herald - the Early Bird' in 1918. It is therefore not surprising that Meynell should also have acquired this important avant-garde carpet given his earlier appreciation of McKnight Kauffer's work.
