Lot Essay

Lucas van Uden painted this same imposing landscape at least on another occasion, changing the figure group in the lower left corner, to the Holy Family resting on the Flight to Egypt (Schönborn Collection, Pommersfelden). This monumentality in nature is rarely found in the work of the artist and it points to the influence of the previous generation of Flemish landscape painters, such as Joos de Momper.
