This study relates to the picture by van Dyck of c.1628-30 in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, though the present lot carries a previous attribution to Rubens. Rubens himself anticipated the composition in a similar oil sketch dating to c.1609-10, in the Art Institute, Chicago.
