Lot Essay

Only one dated picture by Verschuier is known, of 1661 (Alte Pinakothek, Munich). He is best known for his highly atmospheric marine landscapes, which are usually set before dramatic sunsets, as in the present lot. This picture by a uniquely original artist, with no obvious precursors or followers, can be tentatively dated to the early 1660s.
