Garvey is recorded as living in Bath from 1769 until 1777, before becoming a member of the Royal Academy in 1783, exhibiting regularly until 1809. It is possible that this composition was displayed at the RA in 1779, listed under no. 106, and another version of the composition is held at Magdalen College, Oxford.
