Lot Essay

This view depicts a regatta on the Grand Canal, probably the one held for the Feast of the Purification of the Virgin, on 2 February. The regatta was held during carnival, and many of the figures are in carnival dress. For a full discussion of the iconograpahy of the event see K. Baetjer and J. Links, Canaletto and his rivals, New York 1989, p. 186.
