Château La Mission-Haut-Brion 1945
Pessac (Graves), cru classé
Corroded capsules. Badly bin-soiled labels. Levels top-shoulder

Tasting note: Vying with the ’29 as the greatest vintage of La Mission. I had hardly heard of the Woltners when I first tasted it, but many notes later, through the 1970s and 1980s, confirmed its status. Three notes in the last decade: a deeply coloured; vigorous and ‘stably’ bouquet, gloriously tangy and high-toned, dining with the Lloyd-Webbers in 1994; at 50 years of age, a gloriously rich, fragrant bottle; full-bodied, fabulous flavour, still tannic at Peter Ziegler’s in 1995. Lastly a magnum, displaying its characteristic tobacco-like, gravely flavour, very sweet, full, rich, spicy. Last noted at Christian Sveaas’ dinner in Oslo, April 1996 ***** M.B.
