Lot Essay

Bowls with copper-red phoenix roundels are based on earlier prototypes from the Kangxi period (1662-1722). See a bowl with this design in the National Palace Museum in Taipei, exhibited in the Special Exhibition of K'ang-hsi, Yung-cheng and Ch'ien-lung Porcelain, Taipei, 1986, Catalogue, no. 7. Also compare this lot to a pair of similarly decorated bowls from the Qianlong period (1736-1795), sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 29 May 2013, lot 3216.
