PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF HAROLD SHAW
Behind every great artist is a tireless impresario who molds, markets and ultimately presents his talent to the delight of an appreciative audience. Harold Shaw was brilliant at this. His impressive list of clients included glimmering musical legends such as the pianist Vladimir Horowitz, soprano Jessye Norman and guitarist John Williams.
Harold Shaw's creativity was evident from a young age when he would dabble in acting and music; these would play a role throughout his life. He got his feet wet working under the legendary Sol Hurok at the National Concert and Artists Corporation (NCAC). His leadership in a variety of cultural projects was significant: as Director of Performing Arts for the Seattle World's Fair in 1962 (perhaps most remembered for its sensational Poupee de Paree burlesque puppet show) and Executive Director of the Shakespeare Anniversary Committee in 1963 (celebrating the Bard's 400th Birthday). He was also the force behind a ground-breaking musical tour to Asia introducing Western classical artists Van Cliburn, Isaac Stern and the Chicago Symphony to the Far East. Mr. Shaw established his own business, Shaw Concerts, in 1969. In addition to individual musical talents, he also represented orchestras, dance companies, actors and conductors.
Mr. Shaw's sense of culture and refinement was reflected in his magnificent home filled with 18th century English furniture, a place to entertain his artistic circle in one of New York's prized addresses, the Apthorp. Just as Mr. Shaw was happy to share the talent of his clients to the world, Christie's is honored to share the riches assembled by Harold Shaw as collector.
