Lot Essay

Meaning "Unity Makes Strength", Eendragt Maakt Magt was first introduced as the motto of the Dutch Republic in the 16th century and appeared on coinage. When the French first occupied the Netherlands in 1795 they changed the motto to "Equality, Liberty, Fraternity", but reverted to "Unity Makes Strength" from 1802 until 1816.
