Lot Essay

The present objét is an example of a marchand-mercier's combining materials from various sources to create an amusing decorative work of art for elegant, aristocratic clientele. It is interesting to note that the marchand-mercier Lazare Duvaux supplied Madame de Pompadour with a pot-pourri combining similar elements on 10 October 1743:

For a less ornate but similar pot-pourri, see F. J. B. Watson, The Wrightsman Collection, New York, 1966, vol. II, cat. no. 269.
