Lot Essay

With Rolex period blank Guarantee, presentation box and outer packaging.

Connoisseurs of exceptional timepieces will agree that the reference 8171 offered here for sale is among the very best examples of the iconic model in gold to appear in public in many years. Formerly the cherished property of a private collector and evidently barely used during its over 50 years of existence, it impresses with its extraordinarily full and sharp case proportions and crisp hallmarks. The engraved case number and Rolex crown to the outside of the case back, vital features of reference 8171 however particularly sensitive to polishing or excessive wear, are clearly visible, underlining the "sleeping beauty" condition.

The untouched dial seduces with an exquisite two-tone scheme, the combination of the subtle ivory tone of its center and the off-white outer date ring beautifully completing the overall appeal of this charismatic timepiece. Another noteworthy particularity of the present ref. 8171 is its German calendar indication - according to our research it would appear that this is only the second example of this model fitted with this version to be offered in public.

Reference 8171
Rolex's celebrated reference 8171, affectionately called "Padellone" or "big pan" by collectors, was made in a small series between 1949 and 1952. Together with reference 6062, the Oyster version with screw back, it is the firm's only model of a calendar wristwatch with the addition of the moon phase indication. Distinguished by its large size and timeless design, reference 8171 is a favorite amongst aficionados and considered a "must have" for any discerning collection - all the more if in such outstanding condition as the present example.
