Lot Essay

With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch in 1961 and its subsequent sale on 24 February 1961.

To the best of our knowledge, this watch has never been offered at auction before. It is furthermore only the seventh example of a reference 2508 in yellow gold retailed by Gübelin to appear in public to date.

The twin references 2508 (with sweep centre seconds) and 2509 (with subsidiary seconds), launched in 1951, are examples of the waterproof incarnations of Patek Philippe's Calatrava model. Admired through the decades for the flowing simplicity of its lines, the Calatrava is also praised for its elegance and masculinity. The waterproof versions are larger than the non-waterproof reference 96, thus more in tone with current taste and fashion.

Reference 2508 is described and illustrated in Patek Philippe Steel Watches by John Goldberger, pp. 196-197, and in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, 2nd edition, p. 204, pl. 328.
