Lot Essay

The identity of the artist of the present naval battle remains uncertain. Attributions to Jan Theunisz Blanckerhoff (1628-1669) and to Pieter van der Croos (1609-1670) have recently been suggested by Gerlinde de Beer and Jan Kelch respectively on the basis of photographs, to whom we are grateful.
