The Mocking of Christ

This Mocking of Christ must have been executed by an artist close to Caravaggio. As the picture is at present difficult to read because of its very discoloured and obscuring varnish, it is rather impossible to identify the master. It is likely that the artist was active in either Rome or southern Italy, but it has not been excluded that this large altarpiece may have been painted by a French Caravaggist.
