Le Cain worked closely with the publishers Faber throughout his career and his works for their 1971 publication of Cinderella are among some of the best examples of his work as an illustrator. His style is bold and extremely detailed, as is seen here, as the Prince arrives at Cinderella's family residence with the all-important glass slipper.
Le Cain stated "the first task of an illustrator is to be in full sympathy with the writer. No matter how splendid and exciting the drawings may be, if they work against the story the picture book is a failure." (A.Horne, The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators, Antique Collectors' Club, Suffolk, 1994.)
