DIONYSIUS Halicarnassensis (fl. 30-8 B.C). Antiquitates romanae. Translated from Greek into Latin by Lampugninus Biragus. Treviso: Bernardinus Celerius, 24 or 25 February 1480.
Chancery folio (304 x 210mm). [110 2-78 8-96 10-378 386] (1/1 blank, 1/2r dedication, 1/4r text, 38/6r translator's postscript and colophon, 38/6v blank). 300 leaves (the first blank). 37 lines. Type: 1:113R, roman letter, capital spaces with guide letters, 'i[n]superabilis' on 51 supplied in an early hand, some capitals supplied in red. (Some pages torn at fore-edge where tabs have been removed, occasional dampstaining at edges.) 18th-century red morocco gilt, covers panelled in gilt with foliate corner- and center-pieces, spine gilt in compartments, marbled edges (covers slightly scuffed, extremities and hinges lightly rubbed).
FIRST EDITION, a large, fresh copy. Dionysius of Halicarnassus relates the history of Rome from its beginnings to the First Punic War. The translator Lapus Biragus of Milan (the suffix 'Flor[entinus'] was erroneously added to his name in this edition) states in his postscript that he based his translation on two manuscripts from the library of Pope Paul II (1464-71), to whom he dedicated the work. The translation was probably carried out in the year 1469, as the papal archives record that Paul II paid a scribe to make a copy of a manuscript of Dionysius during that year. This edition was the first dated book to be issued from the itinerant printer Celerius's Treviso press; it was his third, set up after brief printing stints in Venice and Padua. He printed only a few books at Treviso (Goff and Hain-Copinger list 4) before returning to Venice at the end of 1480. At least six variant issues of the colophon and the paragraph preceding it have been recorded, but no priority of issue has been established.
