JOHANNES CHRYSOSTOMUS, Saint (c. 345-407). De providentia Dei. -De dignitate humanae originis. Alost: Thierry Martens, 22 March 1487/1488.
Chancery 4º (180 x 142 mm). Collation: a b-g6. 42 leaves (final blank pasted to recto of rear endpaper). 41 lines, 6- and 7-line initial spaces. (First leaf with slightly shorter margins and some soiling, occasional marginal dampstain and light soiling.) Late 18th-century tree calf, spine gilt in compartments centered with urn tools, red and black morocco labels (spine foot and one label chipped, corners rubbed). Provenance: small inscription, cancelled, on first leaf; marginalia in an early hand.
FIRST EDITION. Martens was the first printer in Alost, and the first printer in what became modern Belgium. Martens also set-up a press in Louvain, where he befriended Erasmus and printed several of his works, and where he also printed the first edition of More's Utopia.
