4° (269 x 169mm). Aldine device (Fletcher f1) on title. Greek type 3bis:90 and roman 11bis:91. 46 lines and headline. (Minor dust-soiling on first and last leaf.) English red morocco gilt of c. 1800, sides with wide border, spine richly tooled and lettered in two compartments, gilt edges. Provenance: some neat, early annotations in Greek – Sir William Burrell of Beckenham (1732-96; antiquary, armorial bookplate on second leaf; sale 1796, for £5.5.0 to:) – Augustus Henry Fitzroy, 4th duke of Grafton (1760-1844; inscription on title dated 1796; sale Evans 6 June 1815 to: ) – Rev. John Mitford (1781-1859; flyleaf inscription, sale Sotheby’s, 1859-60).
EDITIO PRINCEPS of this highly important collection of Greek texts on the theory of oratory, including the two major omissions from the Aldine Aristotle of 1495-98, the Poetics and Rhetoric. It also includes staple texts by Aphthonios, Hermogenes, Sopater, Demetrius, Menander Rhetor, and (ps-)Dionysius Halicarnassus. Part II was published six months after Part I.
