The cylindrical vase is carved in relief of varying depths with the historical scene Dongshan Baojie, depicting the general Xie An and his friend playing chess in a pine grove, served by two female attendants standing to one side and two boy servants preparing medicine, while a horseman charges forward with a flag in one hand to deliver the news that Xie An's army has achieved victory.

Lot Essay

The scene depicted on this tool vase is from Dongshan Baojie, which tells the story of the confident prime minister, Xie An, of the Eastern Jin dynasty (317-420), who receives the news that his army conquered the enemy while playing a game of weiqi.
