Lot Essay

When it was first formed between the 1670s and 1720s, the sculpture collection at Wilton House was among the largest and most important in Europe. The collection was formed by Thomas Herbert, 8th Earl of Pembroke (1654-1732), who was considered one of the greatest patron of the arts of his time.
The present relief is a copy after Buirette's square original that he carved as a reception piece for the French Academy in 1661, and now resides in the Louvre. Due to its oval shape, the author of the present relief excluded several features, including a number of the sculptor's tools, whilst adding the rocky outcrop ledge at the bottom.
