Lot Essay

The urn, from a mantelpiece-garniture, follows a design illustrated in Matthew Boulton and John Fothergill's Pattern Book (N. Goodison, Ormolu: The Work of Matthew Boulton, London, 1974, fig. 163, no. l). A pair of the same model was sold from the collection of the late Simon Sainsbury, Christie's, London, 18 June 2008, lot 92 (£73,250 including premium).
