CIRCA 1785, POSSIBLY BY WILLIAM GATES
Comprising a set of eight armchairs, each with an oval padded back, open arms and a serpentine seat on square tapering legs headed by oval paterae and with spade feet; and a sofa with arched back and serpentine seat, the chairs stamped 'IS’ and with various chisel, crayon and pencil markings, the sofa stamped twice 'FS’ and with indistinct pencil inscription '13/16’ and '109/11’, losses and restoration
The armchairs 38.1/2 in. (98 cm.) high; 22.3/4 in. (58 cm.) wide; 23.1/2 in. (60 cm.) deep; the sofa 17.3/4 in. (96 cm.) high; 78 in. (198 cm.); 32.3/4. (83 cm.) deep
