oval, 4 ¾ in. (121 mm.) high, in modern rectangular gilt-wood frame
Inscribed in pen on the original backing card 'Elizabeth ? + Frnces [sic] Trinder / Frances (the younger girl) married Dr Goodwin our / Gt Grandfather. They lived at Rowley Lodge'

According to the inscription on the reverse of the original backing card, given by Frances Goodwin, née Trinder, to her daughter Eleanor Barnes, née Goodwin, on 3 November 1834.

Lot Essay

The sitters were the daughters of William Trinder (1747-1818) and Elizabeth, née Nicholls and the great-granddaughters of Dr Richard Mead (1673-1754), physician to King George II. Frances married Thomas Goodwin (1770-1837) and they had a daughter, Eleanor (1815-1904) who married William Thomas Barnes (1801-1855).
D. Foskett, A Dictionary of British Miniature Painters, London, 1972, I, p. 326 lists a 'J. Hill (fl. 1775-1791) of London. Exhibited at the Society of Artists, 1775 and at the R. A. 1777-1791'.
