Lot Essay

Umberto I was born in 1844 in Turin, Piedmont, Kingdom of Sardinia and died in 1900 in Monza, Italy. He was duke of Savoy and king of Italy who led his country out of its isolation and into the Triple Alliance with Austria-Hungary and Germany. He supported nationalistic and imperialistic policies that were to lead to disaster for Italy and which helped create the atmosphere in which he was assassinated.
