Lot Essay

King Muhammed Ali of Egypt gifted three giraffes to European royalty in 1827, the most famous being Zarafa a gift to King Charles X of France. George IV and Francis I of Austria were also given them, inspiring fashionable crazes in their respective cities. The English giraffe joined the London Zoo and only survived for under two years before being stuffed by John Gold.
