Mrs Shute’s illustrations were included in the privately printed edition of The Lost Plum-Cake, published in 1896; Macmillan -- also Dodgson’s publisher -- then duly published a trade edition with Dodgson's introduction in January 1898. Dodgson took a particular interest in the publication of The Lost Plum-Cake, even giving his opinions on its cover design.
