THIRD EDITION OF THE MOST EXTENSIVE COOKBOOK OF ITS AGE. Rumpolt had been the personal cook to Daniel Brendel von Homburg, Elector of Mainz. When it was first published in 1581, his cookbook was the first large-format and richly illustrated German cookery book. The fine woodcuts, many by the celebrated Jost Amman, depict various scenes, including banquets, the preparation of food, and staff of a noble household. Chapters are headed by a woodcut of the animal (turtle, hedgehog, squirrel, frog, bear, ostrich, etc.) used in the recipes for that chapter. Weiss 3285; cf. Vicaire 762.
