WISDEN, [John]. Cricketers' Almanack 1943[-1949]. London: J. Whitaker [Sporting Handbooks from 1944], 1943-1949. 7 volumes, 8°(159 X 98mm). Ravilious woodcut on titles, full-page illustrations. (1947-1948 browned at margins.) Original brown hardback publisher's cloth gilt, printed white endpapers.
A WELL-PRESERVED SET OF FORTIES HARDBACKS. The 1944 edition was the first of eight edited by Hubert Preston. In print prices had started a steady rise. In 1943 a hardback cost eight shillings and sixpence. It reached the heady sum of twelve shillings only six years later, though a rise from one to twelve shillings seems fairly unexceptionable after 86 years of continuous publishing.
