A VICTORIAN BLACK LEATHER DESPATCH BOX
BY WICKWAR & CO., 6 POLAND STREET, CIRCA 1853
With brass carrying-handle and embossed 'VR' beneath a crown and 'LORD RAGLAN', with Bramah patent lock; together with an early Victorian brass-mounted black leather jewellery box, by Sarnsby & Co Birmingham, circa 1840, the purple-velvet lined interior with two removable trays, the hinged lid with folding carrying-handle and embossed LORD FITZROY SOMERSET, VR patent lock; and a brass-studded leather trunk, possibly Iberian, 18th century
The first: 5¾ in. (14.5 cm.) high; 18 in. (46 cm.) wide; 12 in. (30.5 cm.) deep
The second: 5 in. (13 cm.) high; 11 in. (28 cm.) wide; 8 in. (20.5 cm.) deep

Provenance
The despatch box: used by Field Marshal Lord Raglan in The Crimea (possibly that illustrated in lot 108).
The smaller box and trunk: Lord FitzRoy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan (1788-1855), the trunk possibly acquired in the Iberian Peninsula.
By repute sold from the Raglan collection in the 1930s.
Anonymous sale, Holts, London, 13 December 2005, lot 35, where acquired by Fitzroy, 5th Baron Raglan (1927-2010).
