A NORTH INDIAN KHYBER KNIFE, A NEPALESE KUKRI AND A BLACK-PAINTED WOODEN TRUNK

The first with single-edged blade, iron hilt, and horn grip-scales; the second with characteristic curved single-edged blade decorated with incised lines and punched dots, turned and carved horn grip, in original velvet-covered scabbard with pierced gold mounts, and two bone-handled extra knives; the trunk with iron reinforce bands, some later, and painted inscription 'HONBL G.F.H. SOMERSET / GRENADIER GUARDS'; together with a twisted cord whip with knotted grip; two cartridge belts; an iron boot-pull; a small folded bamboo pouch; and a folded sheet of paper with gold-painted and black ink Arabic inscriptions
The first and second respectively with 25¼ in. (64 cm.) and 13¼ in. (33.6 cm.) blades

George Somerset, later 3rd Baron Raglan, was commissioned into the Grenadier Guards in 1876 and retired from military service ten years later having fought in the Second Anglo-Afghan War of 1878-1880 and attained the rank of Captain. Following his spell in the military he turned towards politics serving as Under-Secretary of State for War in Salisbury's cabinet from 1900 until 1902.
