Group of five Medals to Major F.R. Somerset, 4th Baron Raglan, attached Egyptian Army
FitzRoy Richard Somerset, 4th Baron Raglan (1885-1964), followed in the footsteps of his great-grandfather the 1st Baron Raglan with a military career, joining the Grenadier Guards, with whom he served in Hong Kong (1912-13), North Africa (1913-19) and Palestine (1919-21). An accomplished linguist, he learnt both Arabic and Lotuko, the language of one of the peoples of the Sudan; and it was during his service in Sudan that he became interested in cultural anthropology and where he collected many of the pieces included in lots 272-279, many of which were loaned to the Sudan Government Museum in 1918. He returned to Cefntilla following the death of his father in 1921 and thereafter became interested in cultural anthropology, folklore and myth, as well as political science and architecture. His most well-known and still-studied book was The Hero, published in 1936, which centred on the idea that mythological heroes have their origins in ritual rather than historical fact; and his work anticipated by some twenty years the study of myth that would find fashion in the 1950s and 60s. Raglan was interested in architecture and local Monmouthshire culture, and wrote Monmouthshire Houses, with Sir Cyril Fox, in 1951. He was also Lord-Lieutenant of Monmouthshire, as well as being President of the National Museum of Wales. Raglan married the Hon. Julia Hamilton, daughter of the 11th Lord Belhaven and Stenton, in 1923 and they had five children.
