CIRCLE OF ROBERT THEER (AUSTRIAN, 1808-1863)
Francis II (1768-1835), Holy Roman Emperor 1792-1806, Emperor of Austria 1804-35, in green uniform with red collar, wearing the jewel of the Order of the Golden Fleece and the breast Stars of the Imperial Austrian Orders of Maria Theresa and of Leopold and of the Royal Hungarian Order of St. Stephen
on ivory
oval, 1½ in. (45 mm.) high, in gilt-metal frame surmounted by a crown
Provenance
Almost certainly given by Francis I, Emperor of Austria, to Robert Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh (1769 –1822), mounted to the cover of a gold snuff box, following the conclusion of the Congress of Vienna in 1815, and by descent.
