Often referred to as Harry Vane, in order to distinguish him from his father, he was the first of eleven children. He was a Puritan and emigrated to America where he became Governor of Massachusetts in 1636. Having returned to England the following year, he sat in the Long Parliament, with Cromwell and was one of the leaders of the opposition to Charles I, although he did not take part in the King's trial. This, however, did not prevent his imprisonment in the Tower and execution after the Restoration.
Henry Vane was also painted by Sir Peter Lely (Raby Castle, co. Durham) and by William Dobson (National Portrait Gallery, London).
