Lot Essay

This table design reflects the growing interest in mechanical furniture in the mid-late 18th century and the move towards more functional furniture that integrated into the less formal nature of social interactions after the ceremonious and ritualised court of Louis XIV. The table a accoucher is two separate pieces of furniture, which provides the user with the option to sit and write at the table, or to remove the top and continue writing whilst in bed or whilst seated in a lower, more comfortable seat.
