XU BEIHONG (1895-1953)
FROM A PRIVATE SINGAPOREAN COLLECTION This painting belonged to Dr. Hoy Mun Soo (1897- 1980). Dr. H.M. Soo, M.B.E., MBBS, LLD, graduated from the University of Hong Kong in the early 1920's and was awarded the honorary Doctor of Law by his alma mater in 1956, together with movie mogul Dato Loke Wan Tho. Dr. Soo practised medicine with his elder sister Dr. Soo Kim Lan, who had the distinction of being the first ever lady Chinese doctor in Malaya & Singapore, graduating from the Royal College of Medicine in Singapore prior to 1920, and who opened a very successful medical clinic in Kuala Lumpur. During Xu Beihong's sojourns in Malaya and Singapore, he was acquainted with Dr. Soo and became friends, together with Yong Mun Sen. Dr. Soo's home, completed in 1930's had a special Mandarin Room which housed his impressive collection of fine Chinese ceramics, coromandel screens & antique furniture. Paintings by famous artists were displayed all over the entertaining areas of the house - in particular, Soaring Eagle was hung in the dining room of the home and was much admired by international guests. This painting has never been exhibited before and comes directly from the Soo family. Paintings by Yong Mun Sen from this collection will also be offered in our Asian 2oth Century Art (day sale), Lot 320, 25 May 2014.
