Lot Essay

While most sculptors' models from the Late Period and Ptolemaic Period are sculpted from limestone, some, as here, were cast in plaster. Several complete faces are known, two of which have recessed eyes like the present example (see nos. 46 and 47 in N. Tomoum, The Sculptors' Models of the Late and Ptolemaic Periods). Partial heads are also known, including one half head divided vertically, and one top of a royal head, its lower edge displaying only the upper portion of the forehead, nos. 40 and 90, op. cit.
