After Richard Eurich retired he turned to his immediate neighbourhood, Hampshire's New Forest, as his principal artistic subject. His paintings from the 1970s are distinctive in two respects: he depicts wider panoramas and his fine detail is now viewed from a distance. Evening, Lepe is a prime example of his work at that time. It is almost minimalist in terms of content but through careful composition and the use of an harmonious range of colours it comes together as a lovely painting. It depicts the Royal Mail steampship Andes passing Egypt Point, near Cowes, and the liner, with its distinctive red Plimsoll line, is illuminated for the night's journey ahead.
